Acute Nursing Care
Receives Accreditation

ZANESVILLE — Avoiding nursing homes and rehab centers is a high priority for many people, even when the stay might be temporary. The challenge is to eliminate worry and reduce stress while re-establishing personal freedom in the comfortable, familiar environment of our own homes. But how do you know if the home care company will be of high quality and recognized by Medicare or insurance companies?

You look to see if a home health care company has been certified as meeting the standards for Medicare and of the Community Health Accreditation Program (CHAP). Acute Nursing Care of Zanesville recently received that certification.?

“Medicare certification is the measure private insurance companies look for,” said Director of Nursing Shelly Long, RN.

Acute Nursing Care, which began operations in January, provides a wide range of quality home health care services that allow people to continue to live at home and maintain their independence.

These services include skilled nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, medical social work, home health aides and companion/homemaker assistance.

To receive accreditation, Acute Nursing Care had extensive reviews by CMS (Medicare), the Ohio Department of Health and CHAP. The CHAP survey reviewed all policies, procedures and practices; accompanied staff on home visits; reviewed all clinical and employee files.

“It was an extensive and exhaustive process," Long said.

The company already has three registered nurses, three licensed practical nurses and 28 nurse aides on staff. The assistants all have special training and all staff has been through criminal background checks. The company is fully bonded to protect customers.

"We look for nurses who have a desire to help people," Long said. "They should be responsible, compassionate, patient, cheerful and encouraging. We are always looking for that perfect angel who will help shepherd a patient through their journey."

Commenting on the accreditation, Long said “CHAP is actually stricter than Medicare standards. CHAP accreditation takes us a step above Medicare certification.”

Long noted that therapy services, including occupational, physical and speech therapy, are handled through a contract with TheraPros of Cambridge.

Starting in January, the company began serving clients. The first were pro bono, and shortly after, they added Passport patients under Medicaid through the Ohio Department of Aging.

“Our patients are people who want to continue to live at home and can do so with a little bit of help,” Long said. “Help with daily living tasks like housekeeping, bathing, cooking or getting out of bed can make all the difference in the ability to remain at home.”

Although many clients are older, the company services clients of all ages. For example, a person with a recent hip replacement was able to receive the therapy she needed at home as well as aide services, instead of staying at a nursing facility or a rehabilitation center.

A child with birth defects who needs tube feedings or is on a ventilator needs nursing care to stay at home.

Another, said Long, needs to have an IV infusion once a month. A nurse can handle that, and the patient doesn’t have to go to the hospital, she said. "We want to help people remain in their own homes, involved and active," Long said. "Our commitment is to focus on the individual to provide quality, compassionate care that helps make life as meaningful as possible."

Headquartered at 1077 Central Ave., Zanesville, Acute Nursing Care has been operating in southeastern Ohio and is approved all of Ohio.
